Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizza Fundraiser Again!

All Week Long! Monday 5/14/2012 to Sunday 5/20/2012

We will be having another cooks week off fundraiser!

Watch for the flyer and help support your child’s school. Not only will our school earn $2 from every flyer collected (minimum purchase of a salad or pizza or sandwich required), but we’ve lowered the class requirements to try to let the kids earn more pizza parties. Bring in 8, 10, or 12 flyers (multiple flyers per family allowed) and earn different sized pizza parties for the classroom. 100 flyers were turned in last event, but if we get 200 flyers turned in, our staff and teachers will win the HUGE 54″ x 54″ pizza experience! Mother’s Day doesn’t need to stop on Sunday, give her a couple of nights off from cooking and help support our school and win a pizza party for the classroom! We had 5 classrooms win last time and the other classrooms really wanted to earn the pizza experience. This will be the last chance for the school year!

An Ounce of Prevention – Parent/Caregiver Workshop

PATH is proud to provide parent and student education by Pattie Fitzgerald, a Certified Child Predator Safety Educator and founder of Safely Ever After, Inc. She will be visiting every classroom, individually, the first week of June, to discuss safety issues with all of our students. Teachers will remain with their class and parents are welcome to attend their child’s classroom presentation.

On Thursday, May 24th at 7pm, Pattie will provide a parent workshop in the Multi Purpose Room. She will give you a preview of her presentation that she will give to the students. You will learn how to keep your family safe using effective, child-friendly language and concepts, in a non-fearful manner.

2nd Grade Field Trip – Natural History Museum

The second grade had their field trip to the LA Natural History Museum in Exposition Park. There were plenty of parent/grandparent volunteers available so each group had two or three kids per adult.

One of their new exhibits is the new Dinosaur Hall, which just opened last year. The hall spans two large rooms on two floors so viewing of the large dinosaur skeletons may be done from below and above. Various interactive displays and exhibits allow patrons to better understand a variety of topics. Castlebay had a 10:30am reservation for admittance to the new hall and that was the first exhibit the classes went to. After the Dino Hall, various groups broke off to visit other parts of the museum, including the mammal exhibits, rocks, minerals and gems, birds, the diorama exhibits and the Discovery Center, a hands on lab. Upstairs in another section is a Dino Lab where actual work is done by staff members which can be viewed by museum goers.

At the Curiosity Cart

One group visited a Curiosity Cart in the center lobby area. The students were able to examine some dinosar artifacts and given some dinosar lessons. Later when they met up with the teachers, they shared some of their new lessons about dinosaurs.

Some of the classes also visited the Rose Garden nearby after lunch before heading back to the buses.

Earth Day – April 22nd

People of all nationalities and backgrounds will voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection. Parents, thank you for attending this wonderful fundraiser. We earned $200 and 5 classrooms have earned FREE pizza parties! Big Mamas and Papas has agreed to do this again during the week of May 14, 2012 to May 20th!

Jersey Mike’s Subs – Junior Chef Experience Thursday Feb 23

Join us for another Castlebay Cook’s Night Out fundraising event! Thursday, February 23 from 4pm to 10pm at Jersey Mike’s Subs in Northridge (Tampa and Nordhoff Street). The Junior Chef Experience will allow children to build their own Jersey Mike’s Sub sandwich and have a tour of the kitchen.

2nd Annual Spelling Bee

PATH is excited to announce that our second annual Spelling Bees will take place in the new year. Since the 5th grade winner will qualify to participate in the Scripps National Regional Spelling Bee, the fifth grade timeline will differ from the 2nd – 4th grade bee. Details for each spelling bee appear below.

Study guides for the various grade levels as well as the spelling bee flyer is available below. If your child has mastered their grade level set of words, please have your child try the next grade level(s) study words. For families without internet access or questions about the spelling bee, please call Theresa @ 818.366.0390 and a hard copy of the list will be provided for your child.

Fifth Grade Timeline

Classroom Spelling Bee January 9, 2012 – January 20,2012

During this timeframe, teachers will administer a classroom spelling bee. Two students from each classroom will proceed to the next step. Your child’s teacher will notify your child when the classroom spelling bee will occur.

Fifth Grade Spelling Bee January 23, 2012 – January 27, 2012

Classroom Spelling Bee winners will participate in a Fifth Grade Spelling Bee where the winner will proceed to the Los Angeles County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee. More details to follow as the date approaches.

Regional Spelling Bee February 25, 2012

Los Angeles County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee will be held at Walter Reed Middle School.

Mars rover demonstration for room 20, 21 and 25

Mr Woo, a retired JPL employee, gave a little talk about NASA’s Mars exploration program to the children of rooms 20, 21 and 25. This was followed by a live demonstration of a prototype Mars rover driving over the children’s legs. He started with some background information about Mars and how it compares to earth. Then some information about past Mars missions was discussed.

The children were then invited by classroom to sit with their legs out while an eight wheeled prototype rover was driven over their legs. The children were very excited and had huge smiles on their faces. They marveled at how the rover was able to drive over their different size legs. There was a question and answer session following the rover demonstration. The children asked a lot of questions and Mr Woo later commented that he was impressed with the types of questions that were asked.

For a final demonstration, the teachers were asked to get on the stage and the classes cheered as their teachers took to the stage. Mr Woo talked a little more about how the rover works. This included an explanation of how each of the wheels had it’s own motor and the wheel assembly allowed it to adjust for different terrain. The left and right side set of wheels can be commanded to go forward and reverse separately which makes it possible for the rover to turn.

The classes were given a Mars information poster for the classrooms, and each child received a pair of 3D Mars glasses and an Imagine Mars project post card. The 3D glasses can be used to view images taken from past Mars missions, rendered in 3D and available on line.
