In collaboration with District parents, UTLA and AALA, the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and School Support (OCISS) has recently made recommendations regarding LAUSD Policies on Homework, A-G Graduation Requirements and Standards-Based Promotion.

Now LAUSD wants input from parents, students, teachers, administrators and the community through a free online survey. The survey will be open from March 5 to March 16. The results will be shared with the commitees that are considering recommendations for each policy.

Healthier US School Challenge – Bronze Award

Castlebay, as part of LAUSD, received the Bronze Award in the Healthier US School Challenge. This Challenge is a cornerstone of Let’s Move!, an ambitious initiative to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation.

As a winner of the Bronze Award, our school is among the very best of the best, going above and beyond the minimum requirements to help ensure our students live full and active lives. Our school was presented with a framed letter signed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Tamar Galatzan Speaks In Support Of Castlebay

LAUSD Board Member Tamar Galatzan spoke to a full house of Porter Ranch residents and parents at the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council meeting on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Tackling the ever-present budget issue head on, she noted that LAUSD has cut $1.5 billion in the last two years and can expect to cut another $1 billion in the next two years. As a fellow LAUSD parent, she lamented that LAUSD is entirely reliant on state and federal dollars.

Galatzan was responsible for requesting and receiving an additional $85,000 for each non-Title I school during this academic year. Castlebay is a non-Title 1 school, due to its having less than 40% of its students on the free lunch program, so it doesn’t qualify for federal funding that other schools do. Castlebay received and used that $85,000 to secure an additional teacher this year, which put our fourth and fifth grade ratios at about 30 students per teacher. The maximum allowed in fourth and fifth grade is 36:1. Galatzan has submitted the same request again this year. Let’s hope she’s successful!

Multi-Purpose Room expansion approval

In very exciting news, $3.5 million has been allocated for the expansion of our Multi-Purpose Room by LAUSD board member Tamar Galatzan. As new school building projects have come in under budget, bond monies have become available and she submitted and gained approval for $11 million in improvements to 26 campuses. Mrs. Ihori reports that after seven years of seeking funding for MPR expansion, last November a team of architects actually walked the facility and created a proposal. The plan calls for moving the satellite kitchen to the grassy area west of the MPR, epanding the MPR north toward the parking lot and west towards the grassy area. The MPR will have retractable seating. The timing of this expansion has not yet been announced.
